Clinker sand is processed for use in precast masonry units to comply with SANS 794 pertaining to soundness, shrinkage, and chemical requirements CLS clinker sand also classifies as a G 6 material.

Clinker Supplies: Environmental benefits

It is a prime example of using legacy dumps from a bygone era in a commercially viable manner.

  • The dumps consists of lightweight boiler ash with a high alumina content. It, therefore, has significant advantages in terms of transportation costs and the alumina has industrial applications for amongst others the cement industry.
  • The Emfuleni Clinker dump has for decades been slowly burning and thereby adding CO2 to the atmosphere as well as posing a risk to the community. The operational team has developed a safe methodology to quench the dump in layers with readily available borehole water. Once quenched the layer is then crushed and screened to produce a -13,2/14 mm product.
  • This crushed product is sold commercially with a large percentage of the sales going to another one of the companies in the Afrimat stable namely SA Block.
  • Clinker sand can also be used in precast masonry units to comply with SANS794 pertaining to soundness, shrinkage, and chemical requirements.
  • From a slow burning dump to a brick/block completes the life-cycle of an otherwise wasted resource that would have continued burning slowly for decades longer.
  • Ultimately the land where the dump is currently situated will be rehabilitated and in doing so the local community will have a safer and cleaner environment in their midst.
  • The crushing plant as well as the workshop down to the paving blocks on the site was repurposed from another clinker dump that was reworked by Clinker Supplies and ultimately rehabilitated in the Vaal Area.
