Afrimat has secured a vital role in constructing the landmark Overberg Wind Farm and MTS Agulhas Substation project in the Western Cape. Supplying Power Construction, our team is delivering the essential road-building materials required to lay the physical foundation for the largest single commercial wind project in South Africa.
Project overview: Our role on the ground
Afrimat has supplied 650 000 tons of G5 road-building materials directly to Power Construction, the primary civil contractor responsible for the site’s civil works. Our materials are being used to construct the extensive network of ancillary roads across the wind farm. These heavy-duty internal roads are vital for transporting massive, 90-meter-plus turbine blades and heavy construction equipment across the rolling hills near Swellendam.
Project Duration
- Commencement: Construction on Phase 1 officially kicked off in March 2025.
- Current Status: Civil works and foundation casting are progressing rapidly.
- Expected Completion: The entire 400MW facility is projected to achieve full commercial operations by early 2027.
- Afrimat’s Window: Our material supply timeline aligns heavily with the initial civil engineering and road-building phases, ensuring the site is fully trafficable for turbine erection.
The objective: Why this project matters
The overarching objective of the Overberg Wind Farm is to turbo-charge South Africa’s private renewable energy capacity and alleviate pressure on the national grid. By supplying the foundational materials, Afrimat is directly helping to achieve:
- Massive Clean Energy Generation: Once complete, the 63-turbine facility will boast a 400MW capacity
- Industrial Carbon Reduction: Phase 1 will supply 750GWh of annual clean energy to Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), while Phase 2 will wheel 489GWh to major corporate clients like Impala Platinum and Balwin Properties via Discovery Green.
- Grid Stability: The construction of the massive 132/400kV Agulhas Main Transmission Substation (MTS) ensures this massive pool of clean energy is safely and efficiently evacuated into the national grid.
